Vande Bharat Speed Test — Real-Time GPS Train Speedometer
Track Vande Bharat Express speed live using GPS in your browser. No installs. No account. Just allow location and ride.
Shows: Live speed · Max speed · Average speed · Distance · Time · GPS accuracy
Works on iPhone, Android, and tablets. Best results near a window seat.
Why This Tool Exists
Vande Bharat changed what Indian Railways passengers expect from trains. Fast acceleration. Smooth ride. Speeds that older ICF coaches could never reach.
But timetables list average journey speed. That number includes stops, slowdowns through junctions, and crawling into terminals. It doesn't tell you what the train actually hits on open track.
This tool does. Point your phone at satellite, let the GPS lock, and watch the speed climb.
How Speed Is Measured
Your phone has a GPS receiver. It picks up signals from satellites overhead and calculates position several times per second. As the train moves, the tool measures distance between successive positions and converts that into velocity.
Above 60 km/h, most modern GPS chips switch to Doppler-based calculation. This is more accurate at speed than position deltas. Once the page loads, no internet is needed. GPS works offline.
What People Use It For
- ✓Check if the train hits claimed speeds — IR says 160 km/h. Does it? On your route? Now you can verify.
- ✓Compare different corridors — Delhi–Varanasi runs faster than Mumbai–Ahmedabad. This tool shows the difference.
- ✓Track acceleration from stations — Vande Bharat accelerates faster than Rajdhani. Watch how quickly it climbs after a halt.
- ✓Benchmark against international trains — How does Vande Bharat compare to Shinkansen or ICE? GPS doesn't lie.
Vande Bharat Speed Characteristics
Vande Bharat is not like older Indian Railways trains:
- Distributed traction
Power comes from multiple coaches, not a single locomotive. Improves acceleration.
- Regenerative braking
Energy recovered during deceleration. Smoother stops.
- Lower weight-to-power ratio
Lighter than ICF stock. Combined with more motors, it pulls away from stations faster.
- Design speed of 180 km/h
The rolling stock can handle it. Track and signaling limits are a different story.
Route Variants Supported
This tool works on all Vande Bharat corridors:
- 🚄Delhi – Varanasi — Best sustained speed zones. Open track.
- 🚄Mumbai – Ahmedabad — Ghat sections, curves, mixed traffic limitations.
- 🚄Chennai – Mysuru — Gradient and geometry constrained.
- 🚄Nagpur – Bilaspur — Long straight stretches favorable for testing.
- 🚄Secunderabad – Visakhapatnam — Coastal sections with reasonable geometry.
- 🚄Varanasi – Howrah — New route. Performance profile still emerging.
Speed Comparison: Vande Bharat vs Other Trains
| Train | Design Max | Certified Ops | Typical Cruise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat | 180 km/h | 130–160 km/h | 110–130 km/h |
| Rajdhani (LHB) | 160 km/h | 130–140 km/h | 100–120 km/h |
| Shinkansen N700S | 285 km/h | 285 km/h | 250–270 km/h |
| ICE 3 | 330 km/h | 300 km/h | 260–300 km/h |
Vande Bharat's rolling stock can do more. Infrastructure often can't.
Infrastructure Catching Up
Indian Railways is upgrading tracks, signaling, and electrification under Mission Raftaar and future Vande Bharat corridors. As infrastructure modernizes, operational limits will rise closer to design speed.
Current gaps exist because the train outpaces the network. That's changing.
GPS Performance on Indian Trains
- Window seat matters
Satellite signals pass through glass better than metal. Aisle seats get weaker signal.
- Stainless steel attenuates more
Vande Bharat uses stainless steel shells. Signal penetration is worse than aluminum.
- Tunnels freeze the reading
No satellite visibility underground. Display holds last value until you exit.
- Speed helps
Above 60 km/h, GPS uses Doppler for velocity. Motion stabilizes readings.
Device Support
- iPhone / iPad
Best GPS performance. Multi-constellation GNSS with sensor fusion.
- Android Flagships
Excellent. Qualcomm modems match Apple in accuracy.
- Budget Android
Usable with occasional jitter. MediaTek chips vary in quality.
- Laptops
No GPS hardware. Speed stays at zero. Use your phone.

Safety
Use this tool as a seated passenger. Set it up before departure. Do not interact with your phone while moving between coaches, boarding, or alighting.
Note: All measured speeds represent ground speed. Railway-indicated speed may differ due to wheel slip, calibration, or train control systems.
Technical Notes
- •Minimum 1 Hz GNSS update rate required
- •Above 60 km/h, velocity uses Doppler shift
- •Distance calculated using Haversine formula
- •Speed smoothed via rolling average filter
- •Constellations: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, NavIC (IRNSS)
