GPS Speed Testing Guides
Learn how to get accurate speed measurements with MPH Tester.
Getting Started with MPH Tester
MPH Tester works on any device with GPS and a modern web browser. No app installation required.
Step 1: Check Device Compatibility
Before you start, make sure your device has GPS:
- iPhone - All models have GPS. Works in Safari or Chrome.
- Android phones - Most smartphones have GPS. Works in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Tablets - iPads with Cellular have GPS. Most Android tablets with LTE have GPS. WiFi-only tablets usually do not.
- Laptops - Most laptops do not have GPS. Some newer models with LTE connectivity may have it.
Step 2: Enable Location Services
Your device needs location services enabled:
- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → ON
- Android: Settings → Location → ON
- Browser: When prompted, click "Allow" to grant location permission
Step 3: Go Outside
GPS requires a clear view of the sky. For best results:
- Go outdoors or near a window
- Avoid areas with tall buildings, dense trees, or underground locations
- Wait 30-60 seconds for initial GPS lock
Step 4: Start the Test
Open any speed test page and click "Start Test". Your speed will appear in real-time once GPS connects.
Choose Your Speed Test
We offer specialized speed tests for different vehicles. Each is optimized for that vehicle type:
| Speed Test | Best For | Default Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Car Speed Test | Cars, trucks, motorcycles | MPH / KM/H |
| Bike Speed Test | Bicycles, e-bikes | KM/H |
| Train Speed Test | Trains, high-speed rail | KM/H |
| Subway Speed Test | Metro, underground trains | KM/H |
| Boat Speed Test | Boats, yachts, ships | Knots |
| Scooter Speed Test | E-scooters, mopeds | KM/H |
| Aircraft Speed Test | Planes, helicopters | Knots |
| Vande Bharat Speed Test | Indian high-speed trains | KM/H |
Tips for Accurate Measurements
Do This:
- ✔ Use outdoors with clear sky visibility
- ✔ Wait for the GPS status to show "Connected" before moving
- ✔ Keep your phone stable (mount it or hold steady)
- ✔ Use a recent smartphone for better GPS accuracy
- ✔ Test at speeds above 20 km/h for best accuracy
Avoid This:
- ✗ Testing indoors or underground (no GPS signal)
- ✗ Dense urban areas with tall buildings (signal reflection)
- ✗ Heavy tree canopy (signal blockage)
- ✗ Testing at walking speeds (less accurate at low speeds)
Understanding GPS Speed
How GPS Speed Differs from Speedometers
Car dashboard speedometers are intentionally calibrated to read 2-5% higher than actual speed. This is a legal requirement in many countries to prevent drivers from accidentally speeding.
GPS speed shows your true ground speed relative to Earth. This is why your GPS reading is usually lower than your dashboard.
Accuracy at Different Speeds
| Speed Range | Typical Accuracy | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0-10 km/h | ±3-5 km/h | Least accurate due to position jitter |
| 10-30 km/h | ±1-2 km/h | Reasonable accuracy |
| 30-100 km/h | ±0.5-1 km/h | Excellent accuracy |
| 100+ km/h | ±0.5 km/h | Very accurate with Doppler shift |
GPS Constellations
Modern smartphones use multiple satellite systems for better accuracy:
- GPS - United States (31 satellites)
- GLONASS - Russia (24 satellites)
- Galileo - European Union (30 satellites)
- BeiDou - China (35+ satellites)
Using multiple constellations improves accuracy and reduces time to first fix.
Troubleshooting
GPS Not Connecting?
- Make sure location services are enabled in device settings
- Grant browser permission when prompted
- Go outdoors with clear sky visibility
- Wait 30-60 seconds for initial GPS lock
- Try refreshing the page
Speed Showing 0?
- You may not be moving fast enough for GPS to detect
- Wait for GPS status to show "Connected"
- Try moving at least 10 km/h
Speed Jumping Around?
- Poor GPS signal (move to open area)
- Signal multipath from buildings (urban canyon effect)
- Device GPS chipset quality varies
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work without internet?
Yes. After the initial page load, GPS works without internet. The browser uses satellite signals directly.
Why is my dashboard speed different?
Car speedometers are calibrated to read high. GPS shows true ground speed. Dashboard readings are typically 2-7% higher.
Does this work on WiFi-only tablets?
Usually not. Most WiFi-only tablets lack GPS hardware. You need a cellular model or a phone.
Is my location data stored?
No. All GPS data is processed locally on your device. We never store, transmit, or log your location.
Can I use this in a tunnel?
No. GPS requires line-of-sight to satellites. Tunnels, underground locations, and deep buildings block GPS signals.
